Effects of freshwater salinization on a salt‐naïve planktonic eukaryote community

چکیده
Freshwater salinization is a widespread issue, but evidence of ecological effects on aquatic communities remains scarce. We experimentally exposed salt-naive plankton north-temperate, freshwater lake to gradient chloride (Cl−) concentration (0.27–1400 mg Cl L−1) with in situ mesocosms. Following 6 weeks, we measured changes the diversity, composition, and abundance eukaryotic 18S rRNA gene. Total phytoplankton biomass remained unchanged, observed shift dominant groups increasing salt concentration, from Cryptophyta Chlorophyta at lower concentrations (< 185 Cl− Ochrophyta higher (> L−1). Crustacean zooplankton rotifers were sensitive salinity, disappeared low 40 While ciliates thrived L−1), fungal dominated intermediate (185–640 only highest 640

Freshwater salinization syndrome on a continental scale
Salt pollution and human-accelerated weathering are shifting the chemical composition of major ions in fresh water and increasing salinization and alkalinization across North America. We propose a concept, the freshwater salinization syndrome, which links salinization and alkalinization processes. This syndrome manifests as concurrent trends in specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, and base cat...

15 صفحه اولSeasonal patterns of bacterivory by flagellates, ciliates, rotifers, and cladocerans in a freshwater planktonic community
Bacterivory in eutrophic Lake Oglethorpe, Georgia, was determined by direct observation of tracer particle uptake by all members of the planktonic community. Heterotrophic flagellates dominated grazing at all times, accounting for 49-8 1% of grazing on an areal basis and up to 98% of grazing at some depths. Pigmented (mixotrophic) flagellates were major grazers during winter and spring blooms, ...

The diversity of small eukaryotes (0.2 to 5 mum) in a mesotrophic lake (Lake Bourget) was investigated using 18S rRNA gene library construction and fluorescent in situ hybridization coupled with tyramide signal amplification (TSA-FISH). Samples collected from the epilimnion on two dates were used to extend a data set previously obtained using similar approaches for lakes with a range of trophic...
